Synopsis

My book club picked this one for our October read and I absolutely ATE it up! I’ve always loved everything vampires so this was right up my ally. Unfortunately, my book club friends are more romance girlies so they weren’t into it, but I finished this book so quickly - I could NOT get enough.

Sloane is surprised with a birthday getaway from her best friend Naomi, the extrovert and troublemaker of the two. Sloan, already unsure about how her life is going, is not looking forward to what Naomi has planned - hopefully a cozy wine night in a snowy cottage! To her dismay, Naomi brings her to a gated house with a group of very mysterious strangers who change their lives forever.

Now that life as she knows it is over, Sloane begins a new journey free of her mundane job and husbands infidelity. The group of strangers-turned-friends assist the girls with navigating their changed lives and newfound hunger.

It’s easy to forget that the brave aren’t immune to fear. There’s nothing more terrifying than sitting across from the bravest person you know and watching fear slowly take them, drag them under, bully them, break them until they’re as scared as the rest of us.

Favorites

My favorite part about this story is how “old “ and “odd” the vampires felt. As much as I love the Twilight series, I feel like the vampires are too modern for how old they are supposed to be. The dialogue and mannerisms of this group really sold how many centuries they’ve been around. Their attire and temporary home felt so eclectic and true to their personalities - everything felt like it just clicked. I also loved the banter between the two girls, Naomi and Sloane. It was truly entertaining to see how differently they reacted to the same situations.

Aging isn’t just about our bodies decaying while we’re still inside them. It’s about living with the accumulation of experiences. The heavy burden of the ugly ones, the longing for the beautiful.

Icks

The one thing I didn’t enjoy was how sufferable Sloane could be. I understand that this was vital to her character development and allowed so much room for growth. However, the earlier chapters were definitely tough to get through because of this.

Final Thoughts

I was perfectly fine with being the outlier in my group and standing alone as a lover of this book. Though vampires are quite popular in the fantasy and horror genres, I felt that this book took such a unique way of bringing them into modern day society. Their wise and enticing description made them so naturally alluring, unlike other vampire novels. I would definitely recommend this book if you’re in the mood for something new and unique!
