The Perfect Picnic

As the weather gets warmer, I can’t help but dream of fun Spring date ideas! My boyfriend is truly the sweetest and puts up with all of my bookish dates, but I can’t wait to bring the book club girls together for a picnic! Last year I even went out for a few solo picnics and loved getting to unwind and relax on my own. Whether you’re meeting up for a craft, lunch, or just a silent reading date, a picnic is such a cute, and super easy, option. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite places, activities, and all the essentials needed for a successful picnic!

This was a solo date of mine in 2025 - I packed fresh pink lemonade, a few books, and of course, my kindle.

First, you’ll need to find a good spot to set up in. I prefer my local park or the beach, where I can find enough space to throw down a blanket and relax on my own. Depending on your vibe, here are a few ideal locations you can look for in your area…

Location

  • The beach, a pond, or a lake - listen to the relaxing sound of the waves and get a bit of sun on your face, typically has a bit of activity going on so not always the quietest option

  • A local park or garden - surround yourself in the beauty of nature and fresh flowers, the perfect opportunity to wear something colorful or floral for a little photo-op

  • Hiking trail or camping site - go a bit deeper into the forest vibe for pure peace and quiet, I recommend a buddy when hiking unknown trails, or at least sharing your location

  • The library or museum - ditch the blanket and head indoors for a beautiful and effortless reading date, another great spot for pics

For my South Shore folks -

If you’re in my neck of the woods, South of Boston, consider checking out some of my favorite local spots:

📍 Nelson Memorial Park - 235 Water St, Plymouth, MA 02360

A beautiful public park right on the beach complete with a playground, picnic tables, splash pad, and grass area. There is free parking that fills up quickly, but it’s just a short walk from paid parking downtown, near ice cream shops, restaurants, boutiques, and the jetty!

📍 Plimouth Grist Mill - 6 Spring Ln, Plymouth MA 02360

This underrated spot has a beautiful pond right across from the working grist mill, a reconstruction of the original Jenney Grist Mill! Free parking on site provides access to the pond, the local Gillis Family Tavern, and a lovely walk along the water to downtown Plymouth!

📍 Myle’s Standish State Forest - 194 Cranberry Rd, Carver MA 02330

This beautiful state forest truly has it all - camping, swimming, hiking and biking trails, fishing, horse-back riding, and so much more. 45 miles South of Boston, be sure to grab a map and a friend as the service is poor and the forest is huge, but definitely worth the trip! There are so many cozy spots on the water or on trails overlooking the forest that will make a perfect picnic spot.

📍 Mayflower Beer Garden - Village Green South, Plymouth MA 02360

Just a bit further South, you’ll find a quaint little town that you won’t want to leave. There is plenty of free parking that surrounds a beautiful garden and grass area, accompanied by Mayflower Brewery and Book Love’s used book shop. Take a few more steps and enjoy gelato from Stuzzi’s, lunch at Mama Mia’s, a bite from one of the alternating weekend food trucks, and a new book from my favorite indie shop, Book Love! If you make the trip on a Saturday, be sure to come in and visit me!! Handicap-friendly and extremely walkable, all ages will enjoy a trip to the Pinehills; some may even consider moving into their luxury apartments!

📍 Gray’s Beach Park - Grays Beach Rd, Kingston MA 02364

A staple in my home-town, Gray’s beach is a dog-friendly park right on the water. A small sandy beach, a fenced in playground, picnic area with numerous benches, tennis and basketball courts, a handicap accessible paved walking path, and plenty of parking. A sticker is required to park from April to October and can be purchased through the Kingston Recreational Center. This is my go-to spot whenever I have a day off from work!

📍 Duxbury Beach - 25 R Canal St, Marshfield MA 02050 or 435 Gurnet Rd, Duxbury MA 02332 (bridge entrance)

Where the beach itself requires paid or sticker parking, head there real early from Washington Street and stop just before the bridge for free parking! It’s quite limited and fills quickly, but worth it to avoid that cash only fee. This was my childhood beach and it seams endless - gorgeous dunes and clean water; though it closes often for the Piping Plovers, so I always recommend having a backup plan. Consider the harbor down the street to watch the boats and enjoy lunch at Snug Harbor Fish - a delicious family-owned seafood restaurant!

📍 Holmes Public Library & Park - 470 Plymouth St, Halifax MA 02338

The Halifax library is located on Rte 3 and was my favorite playground to visit as a child! It has plenty of free parking, a fenced in playground, picnic tables, and gorgeous soccer fields around back. This is a great spot that’s pretty under-the-radar for a good picnic. If you arrive on a busy sports day, consider driving another ten minutes or so to the Carver Public Library for another playground, free parking, and a small walking trail!

📍 Herring Run Historical Park - 142 Barker St, Pembroke MA 02359

Fun fact - this is where my senior photos were taken! I absolutely love this park; it’s so quiet and is a great spot for a picnic. It has free parking, picnic tables and benches, and it also allows on leash dogs. I always found it so exciting to go during the Herring Run to see all of the fish!

📍 World’s End - 250 Martins Ln, Hingham MA 02018

Over 250 acres of rolling hills, green fields, woodlands, and walking trails along the harbor and Weir River. What’s spectacular about this spot is the view of the Boston skyline - peace and quiet with a peek at the busy city! It’s accessible year round and has over four miles of walking trails where you can picnic, bird watch, hike, and take some beautiful sunrise or sunset photos!

📍 Boston Public Garden - 4 Charles St, Boston MA 02116

For my city girls, head on over to the stunning Public Garden in Boston Common - one of my favorite places to be in Boston on a warm sunny day. Its beautiful pathways make for a lovely stroll while the greenery and florals make an appealing spot to sit and relax a while. If I were a painter, I would absolutely come here for inspiration. Perhaps recreate the beauty of the background and feature the swan boats!

The Essentials

Once you’ve found the perfect place to settle into - you must make sure you have all the essentials!

And don’t think you have to go shopping for a picnic basket or a cute new blanket - it’s going on the ground and get dirty anyway. I would bet you have most of what you need at home already!

When planning a picnic, it’s important to take into account both the weather and location. For instance, if it’s a windy day on the beach, you might consider packing a sweater or an extra blanket. On a hot and sunny summer day, you should avoid bringing snacks that will likely melt before you can get to them. Here are some of the classics I like to bring with me on a picnic, whether I’m kicking it solo or meeting my girls…

The Basics -

🧺 Basket or backpack to keep things in - it doesn’t have to be cute, just big enough to get your items from the car to the park and back

🌱 Cooler or lunch box - I always add a few ice packs for my drinks on a warm day and like to keep them separate from my basket or bag so nothing gets wet

🧺 Blanket(s) - I’ve learned that it’s better to have support than just a cute blanket for aesthetics, so I prefer to go for a thicker quilt material to lay on the ground. Sometimes I’ll bring an extra one to lay on top for looks, or to wrap around myself if it’s a chillier day

Snack Ideas -

🌱 Deli sandwiches - a classic picnic staple; Italian, chicken or tuna salad, ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, BLT, or veggie wraps

🧺 Fruit platters - perfect for outdoor snacking, think mixed fruit, bananas, oranges, or watermelon

🌱 Charcuterie board - an easy snack top pick at and can easily be purchased ahead of time, or made at home with a variety of crackers, cheeses, fruits, and meats

🧺 Salad - the options are endless when it comes to salad: Greek, Caesar, fruit, pasta, and sooo many more

🌱 Breakfast or brunch - I love to make brunch at home, but bringing orange juice, mimosas, iced coffee, bagels, donuts, or muffins to an early picnic would be so easy and fun. I’ll definitely be giving this a try over the summer

🧺 Take Out - consider an easier pick-up option like pizza, sushi, taco bowls, or subs

🌱 Beverages - I always bring water, especially when spending a lot of time in the sun, but you can spice things up with fresh lemonade, sparkling water, or mocktails

Activities -

📚 Book or journal - the perfect opportunity to unwind with a novel or reflect with a journal

🎲 Games - if you’re meeting with friends, pack a game or two to entertain yourselves: cards, UNO, scrabble, Mad Libs, or travel-friendly board game

🎨 Art - get creative with coloring books, watercolor paints, crochet, bedazzling, or friendship bracelets

🧘‍♀️ Yoga - stretch and move your body with yoga or outdoor Pilates

🎥 Movie - download a movie on your laptop or tablet to setup for a movie date

Add a bit of Spice

Once you’ve gotten the basics, consider elevating your picnic experience! I crafted a very cheap tent in the bed of my pickup truck for date night a few years ago. Using PVC pipe and a few old sheets, it made the cutest canopy for a picnic. If I can do it, you certainly can, but if you aren’t trying to build any contraptions, I’ve come up with some simpler ways to elevate your picnic. Whether it’s for the memories or the aesthetic, try some of these ideas:

🍷 Glassware - swapping your plastic for glassware to add a more elegant look (eco-friendly, too)

🕯️ Linen - rather than paper towels or napkins, bring along some cute tea towels or cloth napkins (look for fun or vibrant designs and textures)

🍷 Wooden tray or stand - adding a bit of height is an easy way to elevate your photos and avoid spilling any drinks

🕯️ Flowers - real or fake, add a pop of color and a bit of ambience to any event

🍷 Cute outfit - put on a floral skirt, a flirty dress, or a cozy sweater and take some photos - even if your face isn’t in them, the skirt or a sleeve can be featured

🕯️ Theme - host a themed picnic for prime aesthetic (cottagecore, coquette, tropical, coastal, vintage, etc)

🍷Mirror or lights - setting up a small mirror makes for adorable and unique photos, as well as fairy lights or battery-powered candles

🕯️ Small speaker - set the vibe with a small speaker or use my favorite hack, put your phone in a cup to amplify the sound

🍷Golden hour - when all else fails, set your picnic for golden hour, regardless of your accessories, the photos and vibe will be beautiful

I hope some of these ideas resonate with you and inspire you to get outside and enjoy nature!
