TBR for Hispanic Heritage Month

It’s no wonder the United States has been coined a “melting pot.” With so many different cultures present, it’s important to recognize those who came together and inspired much of our society. Throughout our country’s history, you’ll see the many influences of different cultures in our art, language, music, religion, and food! During the weeks of September 15th to October 15th, we particularly honor the Hispanic cultures that have positively impacted our society! For more detailed information about public events and other celebrations, you can visit the official organization’s website, here. Otherwise, take a peek at this comprehensive list I’ve curated of Hispanic authors and novels from all types of genres!

Fantasy

The authors who stuck out most when searching for fantasy titles were Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Zoraida Cordova. I quickly realized that both of them were already on my physical TBR! Silvia is a Mexican-Canadian author who has won an incredible number of awards, including the Locus, Goodreads, British Fantasy and World Fantasy Awards. Zoraida was born in Ecuador and currently writes amazing stories for young readers from her home in NYC. She is a New York Time’s bestselling author and has been writing since she was just thirteen years old! Alongside these two, I’ve included other amazing fantasy writers for you to check out.

Thrillers

As a thriller enthusiast myself, I had no trouble selecting these titles. You may notice Silvia Moreno-Garcia makes another appearance here with her horror novel, Silver Nitrate. This book came up quite a few times in my search and I will definitely be giving it a try! One author, in particular, who enticed me with her thriller novels is Aya de Leon - a poet, professor, and activist from California. She is a teacher of creative writing in the African American Studies Department at UC Berkley and currently has a few different pieces in the works. I’m looking forward to giving a few of her many titles a try!

Romance

As one of the largely preferred genres of my following, I had to put some real winners in this list of recommendations. You’ll definitely recognize a few of these authors; such as Abby Jimenez or Jo Segura, but I’m excited to introduce some others you may not be familiar with! One of my favorite things about the romance genre is it’s wide variety of tropes and micro-tropes! I tried to find a little bit of everything to add to this list and am pretty proud of the results. Whether you prefer dark romance, rom-coms, or heartwarming love stories - check out these recommendations of mine!

nonfiction

Sometimes raw emotion can come from the real hard-hitting facts. What better way to indulge yourself in the history of Hispanic Heritage Month than with a nonfiction book? Take a look at some of these heavy hitters I found that carry both facts and feelings.

Childrens

Representation is extremely important, especially to young minds. It’s never too early for someone to see themselves positively presented in media. Take a look at some of these books written by diverse authors for diverse children!
