Synopsis
A poisoned city - A grieving daughter - A boy trapped in a bear's body.
When the fledgling coastal town of Yamu is rocked by a mass-poisoning attack at The Seaview Parc, the luxury high-rise meant to revitalise the city, Hwayoung is one of many who lost family members. Except, she has never believed that her mother was poisoned. Now, fuelled by grief and a desire for revenge, Hwayoung spends her time hustling to save every penny and bring those responsible to justice.
Across town, Doha wakes up in a teddy bear and realizes something sinister has taken his body. When fate brings Hwayoung and Doha together, the two team up for a revenge quest that will shake the city's shiny façade to its rotten core.
This time, revenge is not just personal - it's supernatural.
βNo matter the era, no matter the city, there were always children without a place to stay. Children who hid in dark, damp corners and lived in packs, like sewer rats. Hwayoung was one of them.β
Favorites
An unhinged horror story that will be stuck on your mind for weeks! Not only is this book wildly imaginative, but so well-written. While it touches on delicate matters such as poverty, grief, isolation, politics and so much more, it also keeps things light with comedic relief and sarcasm. It's such an amazing balance of relatability, humor, gore, and absurd plot twists!
It starts off with a bang and pulls you in immediately. The multiple POV allows you into each characterβs mind and background, creating a strong connection between reader and each character. I find myself wanting to pick it up again just to spend more time with Hwayoung and Doha!
βWhen he opened his eyes again, Doha found himself in not a human body but a crudely stitched lump of fur.β
ICKS
I found the middle of the book to slow a bit, though the rest of the story was absolutely riveting! This change of pace didnβt turn me off of it but I found myself falling asleep when trying to read it at night.
βGive us back our bodies, give us back our bones, they chanted.β
Final Thoughts
This book is not for those with a weak stomach - I definitely recommend checking the trigger warnings and considering if you could get through such a grotesque novel. For those who can, this is such a unique horror read and I would love to chat about your thoughts!!
